
Bishop McNamar high School
The lady Mustangs of Bishop McNamara currently have a winning season of 13-6. After winning five girls titles at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, new Head Coach Rod Hairston seems to be adjusting well to coaching a private school. He compared his first few games with the Mustangs to “taking a new car on the highway”. Ashley Miles, a senior on the team, says “we’re starting to blend well” in reference to the team’s continuity. The team’s stand-out guard, Michea Bryant, has recently been recruited by LaSalle University. The team strives to stay focused on their vision of playing game to game, then reaching the post season playoffs.
Huntingtown High School
The lady Hurricanes began their season with a 9-0 start. Currently the team is 12-2. Head Coach, Felicia Hall and assistant coach Lavonne Chase have worked hard with the team. Junior guard, Kaula Jacks is the team’s high scorer. She has had with 263 points this season alone. The lady hurricanes focus on each game one day at a time, but are excited about the potential opportunity to advance to the playoffs. Coach Hall keeps the team disciplined through constant conditioning, mental preparation, and teaching student athlete accountability. In the Maryland State playoff draw, Huntingtown come out seed #3. The team’s loss to Calvert set them back while they lost their #2 seed rank. Fortunately, they received a bye in the first round and host the winner of the LaPlatta vs Potomac game on their home court March 1st at 7pm.
Einstein High School
The Einstein ladies basketball team has had a rough start but they are continuing to play hard and starting to prepare for next season. The Titans are currently preparing for their remaining seven games in the regular season. The players appreciate their Head Coach, Tim Hobbs, and his dedication to the team. Coach Hobbs encourages his team to stay focused and work on defensive mechanics.
James Hubert Blake High School
The lady Bengals are off to a strong start , their overall record is 13-4 and they are 8-0 in the east division. The team is led by senior captains Justine Allen and Christine Weithman. Weithman recently scored her 1,000 career point on January 25th against Einstein. She is the first male or female basketball player at Blake to achieve such an accomplishment. “She’s been an impact player in Montgomery County since she was a freshman so it’s a matter of our kids getting adjusted,” Head Coach Patti Gilmore said. Gilmore stresses the importance of teamwork on both sides of the ball.
Annandale High School
The Annandale Atoms are currently 12-6, and working to finish strong as their season wraps up. Head Coach, Pat Hughes continues to stress the importance of goal setting and teamwork. After a tremendous win over WT Woodson on February 4th, they stand strong as 3rd place overall in the district. The game was won by a score of 43-42, which is the same score Annandale defeated WT Woodson by earlier in the season. As of now, they are on track to finish with the best overall record that Annandale High School girls basketball has seen in over 20 years.
The Atoms are lead by seniors Nikki Clarke and Aby Diop. These two seniors are the team’s leading scorers and are working hard to create a playoff appearance for their team.
Atholton High School
Under Head Coach, Maureen Shacreaw, the Atholton lady Raiders hold a steady 10-5 record in the Howard county conference. The team is led by stand-out senior Amber Cook. Katie Mann, an impact senior, tore her ACL in early January and the team is learning to cope with that loss. The lady Raiders were running six players in the team’s rotation, but now they are back to five, which creates opportunity for younger players to step up. Coach Shacreaw preaches teamwork, dedication, and believes the key to success is hard work.
River Hill High School
The River Hill Hawks ladies basketball team is currently 12-2 and is excited about their post-season hopes. Head Coach Teresa Waters encourages her student athletes to be positive role models and to put in the hard work now in order to have success in the future. Defense seems to be the team’s main focus this season. Coach Waters recently reached her 400th career win last month. However, she has made it clear that she intends to stay focused on the season at hand, not her individual accomplishments. The team is seeking its eighth county title in the Howard county conference.
“I hope that I have made an impact on some of the fine female athletes that I have had the opportunity to coach and mentor — whether it be work ethic or the importance of commitment that has been instilled. ...I just hope that I have played a part in their growth and future development in reaching new heights,” Coach Waters stated.
CH Flowers High School
CH Flowers High School, home of the Jaguars, is currently 9-4 in the Prince George’s county conference. The team’s motto, “Building a Mecca One Player at a Time”, lets everyone know they are serious about basketball and ready to play. The team continues to work on teamwork and focus daily.
Head Coach Patricia E. Frazier believes academics come before basketball. The team motto regarding academics is, “Holding Our Own Academically”, as a result the team’s average GPA is a 3.36. Frazier surveys her teams before each season to find out their post-graduate plans. Over 70% of her student athletes plan to attend college and would be 1st generation in their families to attend college; these students are motivated on the court and motivated to get to the next level.
West Potomac High School
The West Potomac ladies basketball squad is having a tough season so far. The team is excited to have some stability with new Head Coach, Vincent Tate. Tate comes from Coolidge HS in DC and is working with his new team to focus on the importance of teamwork, dedication and finishing the season strong. The team will graduate only three seniors and they look forward to next year.
Riverdale Baptist High School
The Riverdale Baptist Crusaders have had the challenge of rebuilding their team after four seniors graduated and went on to play at notable collegiate level schools. With a few losses out of the way early in the season, they have redeemed themselves with a recent nine game winning streak. The team currently stands at a solid 13-5 in their independent conference. Their intense defensive mindset encourages players to start the game off right and finish strong.
The team is lead by Head Coach Diane Richardson who is a strong motivational tool for their success. There is such depth on the squad that Richardson is able to interchange her lineup throughout the game without losing much on the defensive end. Before game time, Coach Richardson preaches teamwork and the ability to communicate. This strategy must be paying off seeing that the team’s captain, Ataira Franklin, has recently signed with the University of Virginia. Franklin leads the team with a season average of 15.1 PPG.
North Point High School
The North Point Eagles find themselves just past the midway point of their season with an 11-3 record in the SMAC conference. The team hopes to continue winning and repeat their SMAC championship season of last year. As a junior last year, Robyn Parks was named the 2009 All-Beltway Girls Basketball First Team. Now as a senior, the 6’ guard/forward helps the lady Eagles close out the remainder of the season. Parks recently signed with Virginia Commonwealth University. Head Coach Keith Spencer encourages his team and often talks about the importance of peer motivation. Playing with inspiration for the entire 32 minutes of each game is another key to their game plan.
Eleanor Rooselvelt High School
The Lady Raiders are deep into the season with a 5-9 record. They are in the Prince George’s 4A conference and will need to finish strong to be an in-conference contender. The Raiders have played in the past five state basketball championships under their previous head coach. The new Head Coach, Delton Fuller, took over a young squad that graduated six seniors leave last season. Fuller’s hopes for the team included winning 70% of their games and making the playoffs. Fuller is impressed with how the players continue to work hard and work towards their goals.
